Fractional CMO · Pricing guide · Updated

How much does a fractional CMO cost?

In the UK, a fractional CMO typically costs £3,000 to £12,000 a month, based on 2 to 6 days of work a month at day rates of roughly £700 to £1,800. A full-time CMO costs around £100,000 to £195,000 a year once employer costs are included, so a fractional CMO usually costs a fraction of that.

I'm Tristan Gillen, a fractional CMO based in Lisbon working with startups across the UK and Europe. This guide covers what the market charges, what drives the price, and how I price my own work, so you can budget before you talk to anyone.

What drives the price

  • Time commitment. Days per month is the biggest single factor.
  • Strategy only vs strategy plus execution. A CMO who also runs campaigns, builds automations or manages agencies costs more than one who sets direction.
  • Stage and complexity. Multiple products, markets or customer types take more time to get right.
  • Team building. Hiring and managing a growth team adds scope.
  • Track record. Operators with proven results at your stage charge more, and are usually worth it.

Is a fractional CMO worth it?

It is worth it when the cost of not having senior growth leadership is higher than the fee: when you're spending on channels without knowing which ones work, when a generalist hire hasn't moved the numbers, or when you need to enter a new market. For example, at Eat Sleep Cycle a structured growth process drove over €1m in revenue in six months, and at LUX Rewards a focused B2B campaign closed a deal worth £2.5m.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional CMO cost in the UK?

Most UK fractional CMOs charge between £3,000 and £12,000 a month, depending on how many days they work and how senior they are. Day rates for an experienced fractional CMO typically sit between £700 and £1,800, with the most proven operators charging more.

How many days a month does a fractional CMO work?

Typically 2 to 6 days a month for a startup or scale-up, and up to 1 to 3 days a week for larger engagements. Lighter advisory arrangements can be as little as one structured session a month.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

Usually, yes. A full-time UK CMO costs roughly £100,000 to £195,000 a year once employer costs are included, and more at larger companies. A fractional CMO at two to six days a month is typically a fraction of that, with no recruitment fee, notice period or equity grant on the scale of a full-time hire.

Can I pay a fractional CMO in equity?

Some fractional CMOs, including me, accept equity or a mix of equity and cash, particularly for early-stage startups. It aligns incentives but should be agreed with a clear vesting schedule and scope.

How long does a fractional CMO engagement last?

Most engagements run for 6 to 18 months, with a minimum term of around 3 to 6 months. That is long enough to set the strategy, build the team and process, and show results.

What affects the price of a fractional CMO?

The main factors are time commitment, how hands-on the role is (strategy only, or strategy plus execution), company stage and complexity, the number of markets and channels, and whether the CMO is also building and managing a team.
